Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between auto-feed and bump and feed string trimmers?
  • Auto-feed string trimmers use centrifugal force to release trimmer line. Each time the unit is activated, the spinning of the trimmer head exerts a force that unlocks the trimmer spool, allowing line to be released. A spring-loaded mechanism relocks the line after approximately 0.25” of line has been release. Therefore, every trigger pull will release line. Bump feed/ bump and feed string trimmers work with a similar mechanism, but the spool lock is manual disengaged by the user by “bumping” the trimmer head on the ground while the unit is in use. This mechanism provides operators with more control over how much line is used.

  • What attachments are compatible with my string trimmer?
  • For attachment capable string trimmers, the following brands are compatible: Poulan Pro, Ryobi-Expand-it and Trimmer plus. If you are unsure if you have an attachment capable string trimmer unit, please contact us at info@greenworkstools.com.

  • Why does my trimmer line keep breaking during use?
  • Trimmer line will break off during use which is a normal occurrence. In harsher terrain or when used to edge, the string trimmer's line will break off more often as it makes contact with hard surfaces. To reduce line breakage here are some tips: • Keep the underside of the trimmer head/guard area clean of debris. • Ensure that the cutting blade is clean/clear, and the blade is exposed and shard enough to trim the line. This will also help to reduce excessive line breakage. • Avoid direct contact with hard surface areas when using the string trimmer. • In thicker, denser, and longer grass, you may want to go slower. Listen to the sound of the string trimmer, if it reduces speeds, or slows down too much, back away from the grass and start again at a slower pace.

  • Can I remove the guard from my string trimmer?
  • No, string trimmers should never be operated without a guard. The guard is a safety feature and helps reduce debris such as grass clippings from being picked up and flung towards the user. It also has a cutting bar on it to prevent line from overextending and breaking off at large lengths. Operating without a guard will cause the string trimmer to work harder than it must and will reduce the life span of the motor. It will also void the warranty.

  • Why does my line keep unraveling?
  • Line unraveling can be caused by winding the spool line the wrong way or simply not winding it tight enough. Please make sure you follow the guide inside your owner’s manual thoroughly as this process may take some time to correctly achieve.

  • What does reduced gear mean for my string trimmer?
  • A string trimmer that has a reduced gear motor does not directly drive the trimmer head. Instead, the motor drives a larger gear that is attached to the trimmer head. This reduces the speed of rotation but increases the torque. It allows a smaller, lighter motor to produce extra torque and perform tasks more efficiently, while ensuring that the unit is easy to maneuver.

  • Does my unit come with trimmer line?
  • Yes, all Greenworks string trimmers come with spool and line that has already been installed in your unit.

  • Can I use a thicker diameter line than what is recommended?
  • No, we do not advise using a thicker diameter line than what is advised in your owner’s manual. The use of a thicker line may result in over working the motor and could potentially damage the motor resulting in shorter life span of the unit. This will also void your warranty.

  • Can I buy replacement line locally?
  • Yes, you can use any generic brand of trimmer line to rewind your existing spool. Please refer to your owner’s manual to ensure you purchase the correct diameter of line for your unit.

  • Can I change the original trimmer head?
  • No, we do not offer this feature currently. However, we do offer attachment capable string trimmer units that can be used with a variety of different attachments from the following brands: Poulan Pro, Ryobi Expand-It and Trimmer Plus.

  • Do you make Gas Blowers?
  • All Greenworks leaf blowers are cordless, battery-powered blowers or corded. Greenworks does not make gas-powered models.

  • Is a battery powered leaf blower quieter than gas?
  • Electric and battery-powered leaf blowers – in general, are quieter than gas models. DB rating does depend on the model. Depending on the yard you intend to work on, the airflow coming from the device can be a primary factor as well.

  • What is more important MPH or CFM?
  • Both CFM and MPH have their benefits. It would depend on which type of blower you’re looking for. MPH is an abbreviation of miles per hour. This denotes the speed at which the air exits the blower. Higher MPH figures produce large pressure changes at the blower inlet. Therefore, a higher MPH is beneficial when looking at blower/vac units. MPH is usually the more important stat here as a higher airspeed helps move heavier debris. CFM is an abbreviation of cubic feet per minute. This denotes the volume of air displaced by the blower. High CFM units tend to move large air volumes at relatively low speeds allowing large areas to be swept and cleared in a controlled, shorter time. Therefore, axial blowers/dedicated blowers benefit more from a higher CFM and is more desirable for these units

  • What is the most appropriate blower for my property?
  • Generally, electric leaf blowers have a CFM falling somewhere from just under 200 to 400. If your property is an acre or more, you will probably want a leaf blower with a CFM between 400 to 700

  • Can I use my blower to dry my car or blow snow off my driveway?
  • We do not recommend using this blower for any task other than leaf blowing.

  • What is the difference between a hand blower and backpack blower?
  • Hand-held blowers are often less expensive than backpack blowers. They have smaller motors to ensure they're not too heavy to carry. Since the motor is smaller, they have less power. These blowers are great if you have a small yard, but can be taxing if you’re spending 30-40 minutes on the job. Backpack blowers provide more power, and you can carry them wherever you go. They have the added benefit of being more ergonomic since you are not relying solely on arm strength. Backpack blowers are better for tackling large jobs, but they’re also more expensive than the hand-held blower

  • How do I use the mulch function with my blower/vacuum?
  • When mulching leaves the Blower/Vac must be in TURBO-MULCH mode. Items such as small leaves and twigs will be mulched as they pass through the fan housing. We recommend emptying the bag after each use to avoid deterioration and obstructing air flow, which will reduce the performance of the mulcher.

  • Why is dust coming out of my collection bag while using my Blower?
  • There are tiny holes in the collection bag that are necessary for the operation of the Greenworks collection bag. These will allow very small particles of dust to pass through.

  • Why is my vacuum not collecting garden debris?
  • If your blower is not easily picking up the leaves, ensure that the nozzle is close enough to the leaves. Also make sure that the mode indicator is on the correct setting. Press the low/high switch to increase the speed options. The unique design of the blower-vac means that only light weight, low density objects such as leaves, and garden debris will be collected. It’s worth noting, higher density objects such as stones and sticks will not be collected. If you are finding the unit is still not picking up it may be necessary to remove the blower tube or mulcher tubes to clear a blocked tube or impeller. Please be sure to remove the battery or unplug the unit before checking the tube or impeller.

  • What blower can I use for Hard surfaces?
  • The best push power for removing heavy or wet organic materials from soft surfaces like grass, dirt or sand will come from a corded electric blower or from our 80V PRO blowers. The 80V 580 CFM Brushless Backpack Blower, with up to 580 CFM at 145 or the 80V 500 CFM Cordless Brushless Axial Blower with up to 500 CFM of air flow both units offer more CFM

  • What is the battery life and how do I maximize it?
  • To get the most life out of your battery, you should remove it from the charger once it has finished charging. The problem with overcharging is the potential damage to the battery which can shorten its lifespan and leave you in a lurch if it quits in the middle of a project.
