Frequently Asked Questions

  • What oil do I use with my chainsaw?
  • Our units use a standard bar and chain oil. You can purchase this from your local hardware store; no specific brand name is required

  • Why is my chainsaw leaking oil?
  • All chainsaws will slowly “leak” oil in storage (mostly from it seeping off the chain). To prevent excessive leakage, store with as little oil left in the reservoir as possible, lay the chainsaw flat with a rag beneath it and the pole saw upright with the motor head at the top. During first use, operators should only fill the reservoir to roughly half full and check periodically to see if it needs to be refilled. Eventually, you will become accustomed to the amount of oil required for each job. This procedure will make it easier to store the unit as oil free as possible and reduce oil run off.

  • How large of a branch/log can I cut?
  • If you are looking to cut logs with one pass, the log needs to be about 2" smaller than the bar. However, there are many techniques to use a chainsaw for larger cuts.

  • What is the run time?
  • The run time of a chainsaw is measured in cuts per charge. The number of cuts per charge or “run time” that you receive would depend on the load acting on the saw (i.e., the thickness and type of wood being cut) as the chainsaw would use more battery power on tougher and thick objects being cut.

  • How do I know if my chain is tensioned enough?
  • Chains should be tensioned before use. Check intermittently throughout each chore to make sure the chain is kept properly tensioned. A correctly tensioned chain should only pull away from the bar enough to fit a dime between the teeth and the bar. ***DO NOT TENSION A CHAIN AFTER YOU HAVE FINSHED USING THE TOOL. HOT METAL EXPANDS. IF THE CHAIN NEEDS TENSIONED WHEN HOT, THEN ALLOW TO COOL, THE CONTRACTING METAL COULD POTENTIALLY DAMAGE THE CHAIN, THE BAR AND EVEN THE UNIT. WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT USE (OR AT LEAST UNTIL COOLED) BEFORE TENSIONING***

  • Can I use another brand of chain?
  • Yes, however, it must match the specifications of the original chain (gauge, pitch, and drive links). These specifications my be found inside of your owner’s manual.

  • What file size do I use to sharpen the chain?
  • Our chains may be sharpened using a 5/32” round file.

  • Why isn’t my chain cutting?
  • If the wood is burning/smoking, this indicates that the chain is on backwards. Another reason could be that the chain is dull and needs to be sharpened or replaced. Replace the chain if: • The length of the cutting edges is less than 5 mm. • There is too much space between the drive links and the rivets. • The cut speed is slow • Sharpening the chain many times but it does not increase the cutting speed.

  • Why does my chain keep falling off?
  • Chainsaw chains can come off due to multiple reasons such as worn-down bars, worn-down sprockets, and wrongly set chain tension. Please check the chain tension and condition of all parts prior to using. If anything is worn or damaged, replace parts before using again. Replace the bar if: • the groove is not fit with the height of the drive links (which must never touch the bottom). • the inside of the guide bar is worn and make the chain lean to one side.

  • How should I store and care for my Greenworks battery to ensure the best performance and longest lifespan?
  • We want you to get the most out of your tools, and that starts with understanding how to care for your battery. Proper storage and handling not only extend battery life but also ensure your tools are ready to perform when you need them most. A Quick Note on Lithium-Ion Battery Performance All Greenworks batteries use lithium-ion technology, which offers powerful, consistent performance without the memory effect found in older battery types. However, lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to temperature extremes—both heat and cold can affect performance and longevity. That’s why proper storage and care are essential for keeping your battery in peak condition. Best Practices for Battery Storage and Use: Store batteries indoors in a cool, dry location—away from direct sunlight, humidity, or extreme temperatures. This protects internal components and preserves performance. Only connect the battery to the charger when actively charging. When not in use, unplug the charger and keep the battery disconnected. If storing for an extended period, charge the battery fully before putting it away. Check the charge every couple of months. If it drops, recharge it before returning it to storage. This helps maintain battery health over time. Allow the battery to reach a safe operating temperature before use. For snow throwers and cold-weather operation, cold batteries may not power on. Let the battery warm to room temperature indoors before inserting it into the tool. Kindly note: Once the battery is at room temperature and installed, the current generated while the tool is running will help keep the battery warm. As long as the battery starts at room temperature, you should not experience issues even when working in cold outdoor conditions. For other tools/hot weather operation, if the battery has become hot from use or charging, allow it to cool before reinstalling. Indoor storage helps avoid performance issues related to both hot and cold environments and keeps your battery protected year-round.

  • Can I leave my battery in the charger after charging it?
  • The battery chargers do have auto cut offs to prevent it from over charging. However, we do advise customers to remove the battery from the charger after it has been fully charged and to also unplug the charger from the outlet, as this is good electrical safety practice to do so. This will also help to prevent false defect readings and allows the charger to reset itself each time it’s used to charge a battery.

  • Why do batteries cost so much more than the tool?
  • The battery is the most important component for a battery-operated unit. Please be assured we price our batteries with the cost of material, manufacturing, and current market pricing in mind. Batteries are the costliest items to manufacture and ship in any kit. Full kits including a tool, battery, and charger are priced affordably so that consumers can begin building that line of tools and move forward purchasing tool-only units. When you purchase batteries on their own, it is more notable the cost that they carry.

  • How do I store the battery? Can I leave the battery in the garage or shed?
  • When the battery is not in use, we suggest storing it indoors, in a cool dry area - away from direct sunlight. Leave the charger unplugged and the battery disconnected from the charger unless it needs charging. It is recommended to store the battery with a full charge, and if it is being stored for a period where no use is expected, to check on the charge every couple of months. If you notice the charge has dropped, we advise charging the battery back up to full before returning it to its safe storage place. Following these steps will ensure you receive the most out of the battery life.

  • My battery is stuck in my tool. How do I get it out?
  • 60V/ 80V Products: To remove the battery, push and hold the battery release button. Then, pull the battery pack straight out. In some cases, if the springs underneath have gotten locked down you might have to give a small push to the top of the battery to re-engage them to help the battery pop up. The battery pack fits snugly into the product to prevent accidental dislodging while in use; it may require a strong pull to remove. Before use, be sure that the rails on the battery and product are free of debris that could cause the battery to get stuck. 24V/ 40V Products: To remove the battery, press the latch button on the battery pack down and hold. Pull the battery pack out of the handle. The battery pack fits snugly into the product to prevent accidental dislodging while in use; it may require a strong pull to remove. Before use, be sure that the rails on the battery and product are free of debris that could cause the battery to get stuck.

  • How do I check the charge on my battery?
  • Press the battery capacity indicator (BCI) button located at the end of the battery. The lights will illuminate according to the battery capacity level. Please note this switch does require a firm direct push using the tip of your finger. If the button is not being fully engaged, the lights will not activate. Please also be advised the lights only stay on for a few seconds and will automatically turn off. Another reason the lights will not power on is if the battery is completely depleted of power and needs to be charged.

  • Can I use any Greenworks battery in any Greenworks tool?
  • Our batteries are interchangeable with tools that are of the same voltage platform only. The difference between batteries of the same voltage is the ampere-hour (Ah) rating. The higher the ampere-hour (Ah) rating on the battery is the more run time it has to offer.

  • Are there certain tools that can’t accept all same voltage batteries?
  • There are a few exceptions. • Our 80V 20” snow thrower models 2600402 / 2605202 / 2601302 manufactured prior to September of 2017 can only use 2.0Ah or 2.5Ah battery models. • Our 60V 8.0Ah battery model 2957102 cannot be used in the following tools due to the height: dual-port lawnmowers, pressure washers, or the wet/dry vacuum.

  • Do all batteries of the same voltage use the same charger?
  • Yes, they do. Each product line has designated charger models that can charge all batteries in that voltage platform, no matter the Ah rating.

  • The charger indicates that my battery is fully charged but I was just using it and it depleted. Why isn’t it charging?
  • Putting a battery that was just in use onto the charger often results in a false full charge signal. Remove the battery from the charger and allow it to rest in a room temperature area for approximately 10-15 minutes before charging.

  • My charger is flashing red when I engage my battery. Why is this happening?
  • When the battery is inserted into the charger and the status LED blinks red, remove the battery from the charger for 1 minute, then reinsert. If the status LED blinks green, then the battery is properly charging. If the status LED is still blinking red, remove the battery and unplug the charger for 1 minute. After 1 minute, plug in the charger and reinsert the battery. If the status LED blinks green, then the battery is properly charging. If the status LED is still blinking red, then this likely indicates an issue with the battery or charger and should be taken care of either with our warranty team or by means of replacement.

  • My charger has a solid red light on it when I engage my battery. What is happening?
  • This typically indicates that the battery is at the wrong temperature to be charged. Allow the battery and charger to rest indoors at room temperature until they are no longer hot/cold and attempt charging again.

  • Are your chargers made for 220V or 120V outlets?
  • Greenworks chargers sold in the USA and Canada are designed for use on 120V outlets only.

Powerful 80V chainsaw praised for cutting performance and battery-operated convenience. Customers said it "works like a hot knife through butter" and rivals gas-powered saws. Battery life strong for most tasks, though 2.0Ah version drains quickly. Chain oiler leaks when stored. Quiet, lightweight, no gas/oil mixing needed. Some concerns about chain tension and torque under heavy load.

Excellent chainsaw

I've only owned smaller 10in and 8in battery chainsaws so this heavier and larger GW is new to me. I had a friend come over and compare it to his Makita. Ego and Milwaukee and he loved the GW. Liked everything about it to the design, balance , weight and chain speed plus he's left hand and said the placement of the trigger safety switch was perfect. He's selling his Milwaukee to buy a GW. This model has a large washer over the sprocket which at first I had trouble installing the chain and bar but I soon figured out the chain must be slipped onto the sprocket first and then gently work the bar ,with chain on ,over the bolts. Sounds easy enough but for a newbie it wasn't at first. The auto oiler really spits out the oil but that is better than not enough oil so beware that it will drip a lot. That said when its idle and not being used it leaks no oil which my other 2 saws do so I have to drain the oil out of them when storing them. The instruction manual is incomplete when it comes to the chain and bar installation and charging the battery. The battery when charging they say when at 4 solid lit bars is full yet the charger keeps running(loud fan) The battery is not fully charged until the charger stops running . If you don't wait for the charger to stop the battery could be at 85% to 99% charged. No info on that in the manual Total weight with oil in it etc is around 14.5lbs give or take because my scales might be off. Saw with bar and chain no battery is a tad over 10lbs and battery a tad over 4lbs. Value wise this is a great saw when on sale. I would not have paid full price because its not the build of a Makita which was my first choice if this hadn't gone on sale. Model 403 and this model 405 are basically the same saw with minor changes. This comes with the full size bar and chain removable tool but no onboard storage for it but the bar nuts are captured which is great( hate to lose those nuts) lol. The extra 2 chains is a nice bonus and the battery is a BAB 723 which I can not find for sale anywhere but any 80v GW will work. I found it slightly louder than my buddies Ego and Makita and on par with his Milwaukee. The GW has more of a higher pitch whine but outside working probably would not be as noticeable but I will wear hearing protection anyway. Since it's had no cutting use yet I can't comment on that or if it will be trouble free. Read complaints about battery failure but I've had a 24v Greenworks hedger for years and the batteries still hold a proper charge. Maybe its a hit a miss but if you read reviews etc on the other top makes many are plague with issues especially with batteries and on board electronics. This has no power on/off switch which I wanted. No annoying auto off when idle when safety button and trigger are engaged it instantly powers up and the chain has no slow start...instant full speed which is the best when cutting limbs. GW covers everything under 4yrs many makes do not some 1yr -2yrs on battery and charger. Plus customer service is not by bot chat or email forms. GW you actually phone and talk to agents. Authorized Repair depot is 10min walk away and I'm in rural NB. That for me was a major plus. I bought this unseen directly from GW this site. Risky but I read a ton of reviews and watched dozens of videos on GW. I do recommend it. Pic is of the large washer over sprocket.

Only 2.0Ah battery with Costco model

I’m disappointed the Costco bubble of this saw only comes with a 2.0 battery, which only lasts for about 12-15 cuts on a 5-10” tree. The saw clearly needs a bigger battery. Aside from that the 20m/s chain speed reduces the torque of this unit, it has a higher chain speed than most but lower torque so it stalls where others just continue to bite through. Chain oiler leaks when not in use.

Hi Travis. Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for the disappointment. The Greenworks 80V 2.0Ah Battery can yield up to 20 minutes of runtime depending on the load applied to the unit and type of unit being used. Greenworks 80V Batteries can power over 75+ Tools and Products. The Greenworks 80V Platform also offers 80V Batteries between 2.0Ah all the way to 8.0Ah. When using higher amp-hour batteries, you will receive longer runtimes. All chainsaws will slowly “leak” bar oil during storage, primarily from oil seeping off the chain. To minimize this, store the equipment with as little oil in the reservoir as possible. Place chainsaws flat with a rag underneath them and store pole saws upright with the motor head at the top. For first-time use, fill the oil reservoir only about halfway and check the level periodically to determine whether it needs refilling. Over time, you’ll get a feel for how much oil each job requires. Following this procedure makes it easier to store the unit with minimal oil and helps reduce oil runoff.

Good Overall Performance

So far so good. I haven't done a lot with it yet but the results so far are very good. Obviously the electrics have no starting issues and there is no question about leaving it running or shutting it off. Performance with light to medium branch thickness has been very good. The unit is fairly light weight and easy to maneuver. Spare bars and chains are easy to find and bar oil use is reasonable. I am looking forward to more time with this product.

Happy!

The Greenworks 80v chainsaw surpassed my expectations. It works like a hot knife through butter! I'm a 53 y/o female and was super excited to find out how easy this was to use and how lightweight it is. I have the 80v mower and weed wacker but this chainsaw is my new fave! All the products make yard work a lot easier but the chainsaw has changed my storm cleanup. Thinking of tossing the axe thanks to this saw. I can now cut stuff up smaller to make it easier to haul and it cuts my cleanup time in half. (Pun intended!) My property has mature trees on it and limbs fall throughout the year so it's not something I dread doing anymore. Next up LEAF BLOWER!

First Weekend with my new Chain Saw

Excellent machine. Just needed to add some bar oil and away it went. Needed to tighten the bar after an hour of cutting. Suggest checking all the nuts before using. Was really nice starting the chain exactly when you need it. No more struggling to start. Always goes! Battery lasted longer than I expected. Used it all day cutting trail logs and brush from the trails then got ambitious and cleared 40 ft of brush from the lakefront. Battery was still >50%. Should work great for many years to come. Would buy again!

18 inch greenworks 80 volt chainsaw

Greenworks 80 volt chainsaw has the same power as my echo 18 inch chainsaw without the maintenance.i cut down a large pine tree two days after it was delivered.the 4 amp battery made it through all but trimming the stump down. I have a second battery for my blower so I finished with that.i recommend the 4 amp battery over the 2.5 if you are cutting large trees.

Replaces a gas saw with no loss of productivity.

The saw is powerful enough to cut larger logs and the battery lasts as long as a tank of gas does in a gas saw. Cut speed is very similar to a gas powered saw but much easier to use. Much less noise no gas and oil to mix and no exhaust fumes to smell

80v 18 chainsaw

Works as well as a gas chainsaw if not better! No messing around with spilling gas pulling a cord over and over to get it started and no warmup time. Push a button and you’re cutting right away and it’s quiet no hearing protection needed. I’ll never go back to gas unless I need a bigger saw but this does 99% of what I need to cut.

Not gas but not bad!

Not sure if it lives up to the claim of equivalent to 42cc but overall not bad! 1st test was a 20+ green locust stump. You have to be careful not to force the saw; it will stop. Just let the saw do the work and be a little patient and it will do the job. I replaced a Stihl 55cc with this so im still getting used to battery power

I'm sold!

Needed to get a new chainsaw but was tired of the same old problems encountered for years of trying to keep my gas saws (and other equipment) running. I had already purchased a Greenworks 80V blower and 80V Polesaw. Both have been outstanding in quality and consistently good performance so there was no question when I went to purchase a new chainsaw. I hadn't had this saw too long before Hurricane Ida came to Florida but this 80V 18 Chainsaw proved powerful enough to tackle clearing downed trees and limbs at both my son's and brother-in-law's homes as well as mine. Some of these trees were up to 20 inches in diameter. I'm totally sold on the Greenworks products.

Quick to fail

I used this one day and after following all chain tightening requirements the chain still popped off and damaged the chain guide teeth so it won't work. Essentially I have a very expensive replacement battery for my other tools. That was after trimming 3 trees with 2 inch limbs...maybe 4 dozen limbs.

An Excellent Chainsaw

Having owned gas-powered chainsaws for the better part of five decades I was skeptical of the capabilities of an electric saw. But thirty days of using this chainsaw have convinced me otherwise. I've found it to be a very capable tool for falling and bucking 60-foot ash trees. The cutting speed is impressive as is the battery life quietness and simplicity of operation.

Greenworks Pro 80V 18 Electric chainsaw. You need this!

Highly recommend! Terrific chainsaw. Has the power to cut through the hardest wood. Quiet as a small circular saw. I couldn’t be happier. Keep your eye on the bar and chain oil level as it will last about 30 minutes. But when you are having a great time sawing through logs and branches it’s easy to forget to check the chain oil!

Great blower

We bought a GreenWorks power mower in July and wanted to buy a new blower which would use the same battery. We really enjoy its performance and not worrying about getting tangled up when using.

I really like it!

I waited for 4 months for this product to finally come out. I am delighted I waited for it. It is not too heavy to carry around if I get tired I just flip it to my other hand and switch back and forth. I invite others to get one.My wife gets a kick out of me... It is so fun I blow off the drive the sidewalk the deck and the paver stone patio every night just to keep things tidy. Keeping things cleaned up between the professionals coming once per week was needed. This was just the right ticket. No messing with a cord or gas.
