    Frequently Asked Questions

    • What oil do I use with my chainsaw?
    • Our units use a standard bar and chain oil. You can purchase this from your local hardware store; no specific brand name is required

    • Why is my chainsaw leaking oil?
    • All chainsaws will slowly “leak” oil in storage (mostly from it seeping off the chain). To prevent excessive leakage, store with as little oil left in the reservoir as possible, lay the chainsaw flat with a rag beneath it and the pole saw upright with the motor head at the top. During first use, operators should only fill the reservoir to roughly half full and check periodically to see if it needs to be refilled. Eventually, you will become accustomed to the amount of oil required for each job. This procedure will make it easier to store the unit as oil free as possible and reduce oil run off.

    • How large of a branch/log can I cut?
    • If you are looking to cut logs with one pass, the log needs to be about 2" smaller than the bar. However, there are many techniques to use a chainsaw for larger cuts.

    • What is the run time?
    • The run time of a chainsaw is measured in cuts per charge. The number of cuts per charge or “run time” that you receive would depend on the load acting on the saw (i.e., the thickness and type of wood being cut) as the chainsaw would use more battery power on tougher and thick objects being cut.

    • How do I know if my chain is tensioned enough?
    • Chains should be tensioned before use. Check intermittently throughout each chore to make sure the chain is kept properly tensioned. A correctly tensioned chain should only pull away from the bar enough to fit a dime between the teeth and the bar. ***DO NOT TENSION A CHAIN AFTER YOU HAVE FINSHED USING THE TOOL. HOT METAL EXPANDS. IF THE CHAIN NEEDS TENSIONED WHEN HOT, THEN ALLOW TO COOL, THE CONTRACTING METAL COULD POTENTIALLY DAMAGE THE CHAIN, THE BAR AND EVEN THE UNIT. WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT USE (OR AT LEAST UNTIL COOLED) BEFORE TENSIONING***

    • Can I use another brand of chain?
    • Yes, however, it must match the specifications of the original chain (gauge, pitch, and drive links). These specifications my be found inside of your owner’s manual.

    • What file size do I use to sharpen the chain?
    • Our chains may be sharpened using a 5/32” round file.

    • Why isn’t my chain cutting?
    • If the wood is burning/smoking, this indicates that the chain is on backwards. Another reason could be that the chain is dull and needs to be sharpened or replaced. Replace the chain if: • The length of the cutting edges is less than 5 mm. • There is too much space between the drive links and the rivets. • The cut speed is slow • Sharpening the chain many times but it does not increase the cutting speed.

    • Why does my chain keep falling off?
    • Chainsaw chains can come off due to multiple reasons such as worn-down bars, worn-down sprockets, and wrongly set chain tension. Please check the chain tension and condition of all parts prior to using. If anything is worn or damaged, replace parts before using again. Replace the bar if: • the groove is not fit with the height of the drive links (which must never touch the bottom). • the inside of the guide bar is worn and make the chain lean to one side.

    Awesome Chainsaw

I bought this to go along with my other Greenworks tools and to replace my gas chainsaw. I opened the box put in chain oil dropped in the battery and I was up and running and cutting large branches. Another great tool from Greenworks

    Works well.

I normally try to saw limbs and prune by hand but after a storm left me with a mountain of large broken limbs and trees I needed a chainsaw. I already have the 80V Greenworks lawn mower which I love so it seemed logical to get the chainsaw. It's plenty powerful. I sliced thru some 12 - 16 diameter trunks and limbs with no problem. The chain is low kickback which I guess isn't as aggressive?? I had to readjust the bar a couple times within the first hour of use because of chain slack - not sure if that is normal or not. After about 2 hours of use I resharpened the chain - but I also used it to remove a stump and was cutting into roots. Time will tell how durable but it is convenient to just plug a battery in and go. Weight is similar to gas chain saw of the same size.

    Very impressed

I have had my chainsaw for over 2 years and can say it has over preformed my expectations. This saw has been used a lot since I have been clearing land for pasture with it. This includes cutting trees down limbing them and cutting trunks into pieces for burning. The quiet run and ease of operation is great.

    Best chainsaw I've ever owned.

We live and operate a business in the Pacific Northwest. We have a lot of trees on both our home and office properties. Every winter there are storms that knock down some trees or cause limbs to fall creating dangerous situations. Needless to say having a good saw is vital to live and work here. I've personally owned seven saws over my fifty-some years of living and working here; this is by far the best saw I've ever had.Why?1) It always starts and runs. Always. Every time. No repeat-pulls no flooded cylinders no clogged fuel filters. It just runs. Consistently.2) 'Winterizing' (or in our case Summer-izing)? Easy. Clean it keep it lubricated sharpen the chain periodically. That's it. Next season it works as it did last season.3) Torque. Nice thing about electric motors - the torque band is flat. No matter how fast or slow I run it it always provides the same angular force to the spindle. Starting a cut continuing a cut ending a cut. No big. Stops instantly. Super-safe.4) QUIET. I was cutting firewood in the back yard and my wife didn't even know I was outside. That's what I'm talking about. I can use it at midnight and no complaints from the neighbors.5) Weight. Even with a 4A·h battery it's lighter than the Kioritz gas-chainsaw that it replaced. Well didn't actually replace - I still have the Kioritz I just winterized it and put it away and I never took it back out again. That was three years ago. If this one ever breaks I might use it again - but I'm not holding my breath. So that's it in a nutshell. Love this saw. You may be able to pry it from my cold dead fingers.

The ideal alternative to gas chainsaws...

When I received my chainsaw it arrived well packed in it's original Greenworks box (from a 3rd party website). All the items listed in the manual were included. Initially I thought they had forgotten the wrench for the saw but it comes neatly tucked into the underside of the handle of the chainsaw. They should have had an arrow in their parts diagram showing where the wrench was located (rather than have to search through the entire manual to find out it's location). The big 80 Volt battery charges up quickly in the supplied charger - seemed to be less than 1/2 hour to get a full charge. It's simple to snap the battery into the saw and power the machine up. I loosened my chain a tad before putting the battery in since it felt a little too snug on the bar. After adding the supplied bottle of bar/chain oil and lubricating the chain I powered up the saw and started to cut up a few dead trees and branches that had fallen on my property over the winter. The saw cut quietly and smoothly and with a lot of power. I thought the saw might be too heavy to operate (since the battery is bulky) but it felt like the perfect weight and was quite easy to maneuver. I was very pleased with my purchase and the effectiveness of the lithium powered Greenworks chainsaw.UPDATE: I have been using my Greenworks 80V 18-inch chainsaw for about a year now and overall this saw has been really great. The saw is very durable and has held up well during my months of cutting up numerous trees. The original chain was a little less aggressive at ripping through trees than I wanted so I upgraded to a newer chain that cuts like butter and dulls less quickly. If you are looking for a quiet and top quality battery powered chainsaw the Greenworks 80V 18-inch chainsaw definitely fits the bill. I certainly would recommend it to anyone looking for an alternative to a gas powered chainsaw.
