Customers praised this 80V brushless trimmer for its "incredible power" comparable to gas models, quiet operation, and universal attachment compatibility. The shoulder strap aids comfort for extended use. However, some noted weight concerns with larger batteries causing balance issues, ergonomic challenges for taller individuals, and replacement parts availability problems.

Great product! Go electric!

As with many of these products, nothing's perfect. I wish Greenworks would just let you buy some of the add ons like the commercial products from the 82V line and swap 'em out. Will get into more details below.

Overall, compared to just about anything else this competes with, it wins. You might find a better price on something, but most don't run on the ~ 80V batteries, or have that power accessory head so you can swap in something else. Get it, you'll appreciate the power this thing has, especially if you've never run gas. Compared to anything else electric, this has so much power!

Pro:
-power
-ability to swap out accessories on the head
-80V battery system
-gets you into the Greenworks 80V ecosystem (especially if you're buying with the mower & blower kit)
-doesn't have gas motor related maintenance
-runs reasonably quiet for what it is

Con:
-ergos not as good for a taller guy, just my opinion
-tool only, with an extra battery, can get quite pricey
-doesn't have gas-like runtime

Suggestions for improvement:
-enlarge the trigger area just a smidge; I've got slender, but L sized hands as per most gloves I wear, and it just feels like if you've got XL sized glove hands, that area feels a bit cramped... I'd love just a bit more space there
-change the battery orientation to sit in the same axis as a the shaft, not perpendicular to it; others have noted as well, putting in a 5Ah battery changes the balance and makes it want to topple/rotate, which would put additional stress/strain on whatever hand is holding the trigger since it's also fighting the balance of the battery's weight distributed rotation
-consider lengthening the shaft slightly, or just changing the attachment points to allow for more versatility in the placement of the handle and strap; I'm taller, and would love for just another few inches so that I can wear the shoulder strap just a bit longer/lower to improve the balance and ergos

Some background/context. I'm 6' and about 170lb, slender build, and I use this to manage about 2-3 acres on my property as I walk around. I've used it for about 2 years, so I've got a lot of cycles on it. I've got several other 5Ah and 4Ah batteries due to owning a few other Greenworks tools, so I'm usually never short on runtime - just gotta go back and swap out the battery - forces me to take water breaks.

Depending on if you get this via a kit, via Costco, whatever, you'll have slightly different setup.

Right out of the box, it feels great, till you pop the battery on - then it's a little heavy. But it's a battery, so at least the weight doesn't shift on you and you don't have to worry if you turn the thing at an angle. If you're using the shoulder strap, it probably won't bug you too much unless you're like me - a little taller, and might complain about the ergonomics. Totally not a deal breaker if you're using this in short sprints - around a garden bed, up and down a sidewalk, etc. then you'll never notice it. The balance is good, especially with a 4Ah battery in - sits flush with the battery compartment. A 5 Ah sits a bit tall/proud, and will make the unit want to rotate a little more. Not a big deal because of how your hand's likely gripping the trigger area anyways... But if you're taller, and use it for longer periods of time, you'll find the placement of where they put some things is just a bit short, and doesn't allow you to get the trimmer head closer to the ground so you can get a good cut.

However, experience led me to solution 1: Took me some time, but I realised after watching some pro videos, especially the fancier units with the bicycle handles, they tended to wear a harness that was on both the shoulders, and the clip point placed the unit at the waist. So I tried using the shoulder strap as a belt, and I honestly found that worked a lot better for me - I could get the right balance I needed, keeping the machine lower. I later discovered a better solution with an aftermarket fix that I'll discuss below.

I've tried the unit with various string sizes just because I happened to have, and this thing's got plenty of power. For comparison, I have a weaker Ryobi unit that runs off their 18V batteries, and though that thing feels like a toy because it's so light, it does well enough. But comparatively, this thing's a beast - when the motor spins and flings something back at you - I've always got boots and overalls, else I have no doubt the rock/stick or whatever coming back at me is going to leave a mark.

Tried accessory blades, 3rd party harness strap, and extension bar. Greenworks has a character limit. Needless to say, they helped ergos and provide more versatility.

Good product after 2 years

great power

I just got his as part of a combo pack with mower and trimmer. It seems to have a ton of power although it is bigger and heavier than my 40v blower.

Very Versatile Trimmer/Power Head

I have owned this Greenworks trimmer for at least 18 months. I use it mostly for trimming grass and weeds in areas inaccessible to my lawnmower but I also invested in two attachments from another brand: a pole chainsaw and a hedge trimmer. This Greenworks machine uses the universal drive system so it is able to power attachments from many other brands making it much more versatile than normal string trimmers.I also own a number of other Greenworks tools and batteries. As I need to maintain large areas I prefer to use 4Ah batteries vs the smaller lighter 2Ah ones. My only complaint with this model trimmer is that the batteries are loaded into the power head from the side. The longer 4Ah batteries protrude from the battery compartment enough to cause the entire trimmer to tilt to one side requiring moderate effort to keep it level. (This is not an issue if using the shorter 2Ah batteries or the new generation compact 4Ah batteries)Aside from the tilting issue I am very pleased with this trimmer. Since the motor is in the power head the business end of the machine is lighter and easier to maneuver than trimmers with the motor at the bottom end. And the motor has sufficient power to run my pole saw and hedge trimmer making it a wonderfully versatile outdoor tool. The best feature is that it's cordless: no fuel oil or carburettor issues and it can be used where no electrical outlets are available. The only improvement I wish for is that the batteries would load from the top. Then it would not matter which battery is used the trimmer would always be balanced side-to-side. But in every other regard this is a very good yard maintenance machine.

Powahhhh!!

Pros: Powerful trimmer! Nice balance. Love the attachment versatility. Great battery life. Cons: Slightly heavy mainly because 80v battery is heavy. Takes about 1-2 seconds to full spin up/powerOverall: Definitely an outstanding buy!

Very well made although heavy

Pros: Gets the job done! Well made powerful and I can share the battery with my Greenworks lawnmover and blower (both of which I love).Cons: It is quite heavy if it wasn't for the strap which I wear across my chest I wouldn't be able to use it for long. And the other con the string rolls do not last long. I have only used it weekly for a month and already I am looking online for replacement spools.

Great trimmer that also works great with the attachments I have

I have the corded version and this is so much more convenient to get my whole yard done without having to mess with a cord. Already had the lawn mower so I figured I'd give this a try. Can safely say I will be converting all my tools to Greenworks!

It won't start!...AGAIN!!

I also own the 80v 21 push mower and it is by far the best piece of lawn equipment I've ever owned. With that being said the 80v 16 attachment capable string trimmer just might be the worst. I was immediately impressed with the battery life and the power. My blower tiller and pole saw attachments all ran better on this trimmer than they ever had on my 2 cycle gas trimmer. Worked great through leaf blowing season and some light tree pruning in the winter. I was in love with this trimmer!! And then it broke my heart. Half way thru the summer I had been trimming for about 15 minutes when I noticed a little white smoke coming from the motor housing. I immediately let go of the safety switch and the power trigger and popped the battery out. Unfortunately the little stream of white smoke briefly became a larger stream of white smoke before it stopped smoking. The battery is still working but the trimmer hasn't started since. I filled out a customer contact form requesting warranty info months ago and (due to reading reviews that complained about long wait times with customer service) I immediately purchased an identical trimmer out of pocket and at full price to get me through the rest of the summer. I had hoped the 1st one dying on me was a fluke and was looking forward to having it fixed or replaced using the warranty because I would then have 2 amazing trimmers and could extend their lives by rotating them out on occasion. A couple months later at best (and with no contact from customer service at all) my practically brand new trimmer has died. This one suddenly started running at what seemed to be 1/2 power for a minute or two and then just stopped. Again battery is fine and I now have 2 trimmers that won't start. I decided to check on the contact ticket I submitted a couple of months ago to see if there was an update on my first claim prior to starting a second one ...only to discover that my ticket was closed with absolutely no comment reason or resolution. I'm about to file a second request for warranty coverage on a second trimmer and hope to have better luck with this one. Absolutely disgusted by the whole ordeal I guess I'll shop around for a trimmer that will last and a company that actually stands behind their product. RIP Ticket #483038 - Never Forget

Great tool!

The 80V battery is quite heavy so learning how to balance the trimmer while trying to cut evenly takes some time to get used to. The trigger action is a bit different but by the 2nd or 3rd use I got used it and was able to control the speed pretty much the way I desired. It's a bit heavy for a long work job but for small lawns it's great. My only concern is that it doesn't come with proper instructions on how to put the trimmer together out of the box. When I first started the trimmer the bottom part fell off and flew out. I had to figure out how to put it back together myself.

string trimmer

trimmer is equal to the gas trimmer that it replaced without the expense of repairs and breakdowns.

2
233979355
Lots of power/endurance - could hold more string

The 2A battery has plenty juice for all my trimming needs. The only con is that the string length you can load is short for a double string trimmer but it's easy enough to reload. It will cover all your trimming needs and can be used for some light duty edging.

2

Roller Attachment request

Trimmer needs to offer a roller attachment to help with trimming edges rather then having to hold steady to meet objective of straight edges

Much preferred over gas trimmer.

This is in response to my second purchase of this item. The first one is running well but has a carbide saw blade for brush cutting. What I like:1. Little noise compared to gas powered2. No pull to start3. No gas to mix4. Sufficient power5. Easy to use....pop in battery and push the button. For my usage I cannot see ever going back to a gas powered trimmer.I am a 35 year design engineer and there are numerous things I see on Greenworks products where a few improvements could make a bid difference in the overall package.1. The handle needs a quick clamp to quickly adjust for different usages.2. The switch/handle area needs some ergonomic improvements.3. I have Scoliosis so relieving any load on my back is better. Greenworks has a vest with a battery holder. I would like to a battery holder to put on at the waist.

Its alright

The trimmer itself is okay. It does what it is supposed to. My complaint is with the design of the handle. Anytime I need to readjust the handle I need to go find a phillips screwdriver. It would have been a better design to put a knob to tighten up the handle. Also this doesn't have variable speed while other competitors offer that feature for similar price range.

Easy to use

I bought this last month. Very simple to assemble. Chsrged battery and off to work I went. Very easy to use and balance. Cut great and easy to maneuver. I can add attachments if needed. Great buy.

Very capable with a drawback

Capable quiet tool - battery enters on one side which makes the whole thing want to lean over and a pain to have to keep uprightAnnoying because the non-attachment-capable one goes directly in the center-rear and is probably a lot nicer to handle. It’s not as though there is a huge range of attachments that makes this worth it - I probably would have chosen the other one if I had knownI use the 5Ah battery which probably doesn’t help but why buy another battery when one does my whole yard in both the mower and strimmer?Love the 80V range btw !

Slow shipping no customer service

Customer service does not respond to emails or phone calls. You have to make a bad review in order to have them contact you. Other than that the product works great. Shipping is very slow.

Incredible power in a cordless electric tool!

Great tool that gives you plenty of power to chop through some pesky longer brush and weeds.
